Overview
Most recently, and we are really excited about this, our chapter has received up to $115,000 from the Federal Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP) to improve a portion of Gordon Creek in Iowa County downstream from the Dane County section we have been involved in. Groundbreaking is this summer. Details will be available as the project starts up. Contact Jim Gentry
The Gordon Creek Project is a continuation of projects we have undertaken with the Dane County Land Conservation District to protect the headwaters of Gordon Creek in western Dane County. Roughly $300,000 of public money and many volunteer hours have been spent improving and protecting the German Valley Branch of Gordon, to provide clean, cold water downstream as well as spawning habitat for the Gordon Creek system.
In addition over the past year we have become active partners with local DNR in helping to implement their first overall stream maintenance plan. So far this mainly involves brushing and installing sweepers on Black Earth Creek .Look for fishing and habitat improvements on Black Earth and Mt. Vernon creeks. Also, East Branch of Blue Mounds creek is targeted for a major restoration effort and our chapter will be active partners with the DNR on that. Other tasks at hand include tree removal on Token Creek and burning of brush piles along Black Earth creek. Workday times are posted on the home page of the website as they are scheduled, mainly in the fall and early spring.
