July chapter meeting is our annual ‘On the Stream” meeting and chapter picnic.
There is no chapter meeting in August.
BOARD MEETINGS
Last Tuesday of every month, 6:30pm, Coliseum Bar and Restaurant, upstairs. Map. Mandatory for board members, chapter members always welcome. If a chapter member wants to put an item on the agenda, please contact the Chapter President one week in advance.
Our agendas generally include chapter project updates, requests for project funding, conservation issues and event planning. On occasion, we invite a guest to address a specific issue.
Odd board meetings:
No December board meeting.
No July board meeting.
NEWSLETTER DEADLINE
Please submit any newsletter material to Newsletter Editor by the last Tuesday of the month for the next Newscast. The newsletter is published monthly in the week after the last Tuesday Board meeting. There is no newsletter in August. Send your email address to admin@swtu.org if you are not getting the newsletter.
SPECIAL ANNUAL MEETINGS/EVENTS:
FLY TYING JAMBOREE- January Chapter meeting
Any and all seasoned tyers invited to come with their gear and tie flies for the Icebreaker and
the March Auction. This is always an impressive display of talent and innovation. Bring your

NASH WILLIAMS BANQUET- January, Friday before the ICEBREAKER
An evening of celebration before the Icebreaker. Chapter members and their spouses, our
featured Icebreaker speakers and a trout (or chicken) dinner. Usually scheduled from 5:30-
9:30pm at an area restaurant. This is an especially welcoming event for member spouses, as
we ask our speakers to take a less technical approach for their presentations. Tickets john.schweiger@dva.state.wi.us
ICE BREAKER - January, third Saturday
An all Saturday event at the Promega Center, featuring 2 speakers, (2 slide lectures each), phenomenal bucket raffles, fly tying demos, a great food and about 300 trout fishers ready to be done with winter! Our major annual fundraiser and a celebration of trout fishing in the area.
FLY TYING CLASSES - 10 consescutive weeks starting in the third week in January. See Flyting.
Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced courses provide general instruction on fly tying techniques and specific demonstrations of fly patterns proven effective in local waters. Experienced instructors, some of whom are accomplished and acknowledged masters, instruct the classes using a combination of demonstrations and hands-on tutorials.
FISHING EXPO- February, third Weekend
At the Aliant Expo center. Friday through Sunday event. SWTU is expected to volunteer for
staffing various needs, including the TU booth. The Expo is a significant source of grant monies for stream projects, so our participation is important. Also, it is a good way to participate in the area fishing community. A great event for kids. Contact admin@swtu.org
MARCH MADNESS-March Chapter meeting
Another major fundraiser for SWTU, this is a live auction following the usual dinner gathering,
featuring great donated gear and our ruthless, entertaining auctioneers. Swap/sell tables set up before dinner. Must be seen to be believed. This one often goes late, but everyone leaves happy. Need volunteer Auctioneers and folks to keep track ofthe buyer tallies. Contact admin@swtu.org
SHABAZZ GREEN TEEN PROGRAM-March thru late May.
Teaching Shabazz High School kids about team building, the enviroment, stream restoration and the sport of fly fishing. Culminating with week long field trip to Avalanche. Volunteer intructors needed for high school sites and Avalanche. Contact admin@swtu.org
AWARDS MEETING-April Chapter meeting
Our annual awards ceremony, and Board elections. A night to look back across the previous
years’ accomplishments, welcome home alumni and old friends, and to celebrate our
successes! Contact the Chapter President if you want to nominate someone or be considered for a board or other leadership position. Contact John Strauss, jcs@mail.slh.wisc.edu if you want to nominate someone for an award.
CASTING CLINIC- April, third Saturday (generally)
Our annual free clinic at Salmo pond. A great opportunity to meet new (and old) members,
brush up on your technique or see if you know enough about casting and fishing to teach it! Kids welcome,as always! Contact Jeff at riversmith@charter.net
BEC CLEAN UP - April, date flexible
Home water maintenance. Usually a 3-hour effort. Amazing collection of debris and a great
feeling of satisfaction are the major outcomes. Joint event with BECWA. Contact admin@swtu.org
CHAPTER OUTING - May, second or third Saturday
Mostly camping and fishing at Avalanche, on the West Fork of the Kickapoo. Come Friday and
pitch your tent. BS session plus music around the fire on Saturday night. All members welcome. A great opportunity to fish with your fellow members, some of whom are real experts, in the heart of the driftless area.
FISHING AT KALSCHEUR PONDS - June, second Saturday
John Schweiger and the Kalscheur family are responsible for this wonderful event. A day of
fishing for lunker Rainbows in private ponds with kids and adults with disabilities. Tackle set up happens the Friday evening before. We always need lots of helpers for this one and it is one of the most rewarding things you will do with the chapter. Contact john.schweiger@dva.state.wi.us
ON THE STREAM CHAPTER MEETING-July Chapter meeting, usually the 2nd Saturday in July
Location varies, event includes a stream shocking demo by the DNR boys and a great brats and
beans lunch courtesy of Mark Rhinerson and Dr. Sausage.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
STREAM WORK- Pretty much year round
Our Special Projects Chair, Mike Grimes marshals impressive forces throughout the hospitable months to address a wide range of local stream improvements. Chosen Saturdays, 8-noon with lunch provided. If you like the righteous ache of well used muscles and appreciate the camaraderie of a crew with a purpose, introduce yourself to Mike and give him your phone number/email.Contact mgrimes17@charter.net
MEMBERS CHOICE-Own your chapter
Members come up with a variety of special projects, from raffles to walkathons to lobbying the lesgislature, to fly casting clinics with renowned instructors, to writing grants for various projects.
